Seven Mistakes People Make Buying Their First 3D Printer
Every one of these is common, and every one of them is avoidable before you spend anything.
1. Buying on maximum speed
"600 mm/s" is a ceiling reached on a straight external wall on a test model, not a throughput figure. Real prints have corners, small features, overhangs and cooling limits, and every one of them forces the machine to slow down. Two printers advertising 500 and 600 mm/s will usually finish the same real part within twenty per cent of each other.
Acceleration and input shaping quality matter far more than the headline number, and neither appears on the box.
2. Over-buying build volume
A 350 mm cube sounds like insurance. In practice it means a bigger, heavier, more expensive machine that heats a huge bed for every small print, and most owners discover their largest print in the first year was under 200 mm.
Parts split and bond together well. Height is the dimension people genuinely run out of, not width โ check Z before you check the bed.
3. Skipping the enclosure, then wanting ABS
This is the most common upgrade regret. PLA and PETG are fine in open air. The moment you want ABS, ASA, polycarbonate or most carbon-filled filaments, an open frame stops you dead โ warping and delamination are thermal problems, not slicer problems.
If there is any chance you will want engineering materials, the difference between the Bambu P1P and P1S, or picking an Elegoo Centauri Carbon over an open-frame rival, is money well spent up front.
4. Paying for multi-colour before you know you want it
It is slow and it wastes a great deal of filament in purge โ a 40 g model can burn 150 g of spool. It is wonderful for display pieces and pointless for functional parts. Nearly every AMS-style system can be added later. Buy the better printer now, add colour when you have a reason.
5. Forgetting the running costs
The printer is not the whole purchase. Budget for filament (you will use more than you think), a hardened nozzle if you go anywhere near carbon fibre, spare build plates, and โ most importantly โ a filament dryer. Wet filament is behind an enormous share of "my printer is broken" problems, and it presents as stringing, popping, weak layers and rough surfaces that look exactly like hardware faults.
6. Not deciding about the cloud
Some ecosystems lean on a vendor's cloud service for slicing, monitoring and updates. That is convenient and works well. It is also a dependency, and it matters if you are printing commercially, working somewhere with IT restrictions, or you simply object to it.
Decide before you buy, not after. Open machines โ Prusa, Qidi, Sovol, anything running stock Klipper โ put everything on your own network.
7. Buying the cheapest thing on the marketplace
There is a floor below which you are buying someone else's abandoned project. A no-name printer at $120 has no community, no spare parts, no slicer profiles and no firmware updates, and every hour you spend fighting it is an hour you did not spend printing.
The genuine budget tier is well served โ the A1 Mini, the Ender 3 V3 KE, the Neptune 4 Pro are all real machines with real support behind them. Start there rather than below it.
The short version: buy an enclosed machine from a brand with a community, in the smallest size that fits your actual parts, and spend the money you saved on a filament dryer and a few good spools.
