Resin vs Filament โ Which One Do You Actually Need?
Resin wins on detail by a margin that photographs cannot convey. Then there is the rest of it.
People see a resin-printed miniature next to an FDM one and immediately want a resin printer. It is an understandable reaction โ the detail gap is not subtle, and it is not close. Then they buy one, use it four times, and sell it.
Here is what the comparison shot does not show you.
What resin genuinely wins
Detail. An MSLA printer cures a whole layer at once through an LCD mask, at pixel sizes around 17โ19 microns. There are no extrusion lines, no visible layer stepping on curved surfaces, and fine features โ chainmail, facial detail, filigree โ resolve properly. FDM cannot approach this, and no amount of tuning changes that.
Consistency across small parts. Printing forty identical miniatures on one plate takes barely longer than printing one, because the whole layer cures simultaneously regardless of how much is on it.
Smooth curved surfaces. No layer lines to sand.
What resin costs you
The workflow. A finished print is not finished. It comes out coated in uncured resin and must be washed in isopropyl alcohol, dried, and then cured under UV. Supports are dense and must be clipped off, leaving marks to clean up. Budget forty minutes of hands-on work per plate.
The safety handling. Uncured resin is a skin sensitiser. Nitrile gloves every time, no exceptions โ sensitisation is cumulative and permanent, and people who get careless develop reactions that end the hobby for them. It needs ventilation, and the waste IPA and failed prints are hazardous waste that cannot go in a household bin.
Material properties. Standard resin prints are brittle. Tough and ABS-like resins exist and help, but a resin part is generally not the right choice for something that takes load or impact.
Consumables. The LCD panel is a wear item and will need replacing. FEP or release film needs periodic replacement too.
Choose FDM if
You want functional parts, enclosures, brackets, prototypes, toys, or anything larger than a fist. You want to print in a room where people live. You want to start a print and walk away. You want cheap material and no post-processing. This is most people, most of the time.
Choose resin if
You are printing tabletop miniatures, busts, jewellery masters, dental or dollhouse-scale detail โ and the detail is the entire point of the exercise. You have a garage, a shed, or a well-ventilated utility room. You are willing to treat it as a wet chemical process, because that is what it is.
The Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra and Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro are both excellent, and both cost about the same as a good FDM printer.
The answer most people arrive at
Buy the FDM printer first. It is more generally useful, it teaches you the fundamentals of slicing and orientation and supports, and you will use it far more often than you expect.
If, a year later, you find you are consistently frustrated by FDM's detail ceiling on the specific thing you keep printing โ buy a resin printer as a second machine, for that job. Owning both is common. Owning only a resin printer is rare, and there is a reason for that.
